The city is the center of growth in the Coacella Valley. In the winter, people called "snowbirds" come from cold areas such as northern, eastern and Canada in the United States, increasing the winter population by about 31,000. In recent years, migrants from coastal and California cities have become full-time workers.
History
The area was initially known as the Old McDonald's Lunch, but was renamed Palm Village in the 1920s when it was planted with date palm.
In 1943, the first housing development started in connection with the army building a base in the area. The site of the base was later developed as an "El Paseo", a luxury shopping mall similar to Los Angeles's rodeo drive. In 1948, Palm Desert Co., Ltd. started to develop real estate, and in 1951 it became the current name.
Many celebrities, including Rita Radner, have their homes for palm desserts. In recent years, professional golfers Michel Wee and Bill Gates' villas are also available. When the city was incorporated into a juridical person on November 26, 1973, only 1,500 people had settled in Japan. The Palm Desert was located in a planned city spreading in the desert from Palm Springs to Indio.
geography
According to the National Census Bureau, the total area of the city is 27.0 square miles (70 km2), of which the land area is 26.8 square miles (69 km2) and the water area is 0.2 square miles (0.52 km 2).
The height of the city's altitude is slowly rising from the northern half of the city, which was once covered by sand dunes, to the south. The elevation of the city hall is 68 meters. The city is located in the Coacella Valley and the Sonora Desert stretches north to west.
Sun City Palm Desert is an unincorporated community on the north side of Route 10 between Palm Desert and Interstate Expressway, not part of the city. It was called Sun City Palm Springs from 1991 to 1996.
climate
The climate of the Coacella Valley is greatly affected by the surrounding terrain. The geographical features of a valley surrounded by high mountains on three sides and sloping to the south contribute to a mild climate throughout the year.
The highest temperature in summer is normal at 42°C and sometimes reaches 49°C. At night it falls to about 28°C. It is warm even in winter, and the temperature during the day is from 23°C to 29°C. The average annual rainfall is less than 130mm, and the number of sunny days exceeds 348 days a year. The average annual maximum temperature is 32°C, the average minimum temperature is 17°C, one of the hottest places in the United States.
The highest temperature ever recorded was 52°C on July 6, 1905. At the foot of the mountain on the south side of the palm desert, a slope warm belt is formed, and the temperature during winter night is quite high. The University of California has an observation station in this slope-warming zone.
